Department of Mechanical Engineering is looking for 3 Ph.D. in Materials and Surface Technology related to strengthen our strategic research activities in Materials in Sustainable Energy Applications.
The section for Materials and Surface Engineering is involved in externally financed national and international strategic research programs through which the following Ph.D. positions have become available:
Modeling of high temperature corrosion of metals in biomass-fired power plants (financed through the Danish Research Council for Strategic Research)
This PhD project addresses the modeling of the interaction of metallic materials with aggressive environments as occurring in biomass fired power plants, most notably under hot corrosion conditions. A combination of materials modeling and experimental investigations under laboratory conditions will be used to arrive at designing alternative materials that potentially can withstand hot corrosion environments.
Alternative coatings for protection against high temperature corrosion (financed though EU 7th frame work program
This PhD project addresses the protection of metallic materials exposed to aggressive gas atmospheres at elevated temperatures. The development/investigation of thin ceramic coatings deposited on high temperature materials will be the main task in the project, i.e. surface engineering for high temperature corrosion protection. The project encompasses the disciplines metallurgy, surface engineering and chemistry.
Failure mechanisms in metallic components of Wind turbine drive trains (financed through the Danish Research Council for Strategic Research)
The PhD project addresses the investigation of failure mechanisms in gears and bearings of wind turbine drive trains in relation to the manufacturing history, the materials choice and the drift conditions (among which lubrication and loading history). The ultimate goal is to propose optimized materials choice and materials manufacturing to withstand typical loading conditions.
Starting date: As soon as possible.
