PhD Scholarship Program in Management

The program is designed to prepare students for research and teaching careers in academia, as well as for research-oriented positions in industry. The program offers two concentrations: (1) operations and information management; and (2) organizational behaviour and human resources management.

Students complete two years of coursework that exposes them to state-of-the-art research in their selected area of study and prepares them to undertake independent, original research during the dissertation stage.

Program Information

Memorial’s PhD in Management is a four-year full-time program. It is offered by the Faculty of Business Administration and is subject to the regulations of the School of Graduate Studies.

Courses

In the first two years of the program, students will complete a program of courses in research methods and either (1) operations management and information systems or (2) organizational behaviour and human resources management

Summer Research Project

During the first summer of the program, students will complete a research project under the supervision of a faculty member in the area of specialization. Projects will then be presented in a research seminar during the second year of the program.

Comprehensive Exam

By the end of the seventh semester of the program, students will take a written comprehensive exam.

PhD Thesis

All students must submit a thesis proposal by the end of the eighth semester in the program, laying out a program of research that will make an independent and original research contribution. This will be followed by an oral presentation of the proposal. On acceptance, students will complete the research plans outlined in the proposal.

Teaching

Students in the PhD program will be given the opportunity to teach in the third and fourth year of their program.

Student Outcomes

Throughout the program, students will explore new ways of thinking. World-renowned researchers will work with students on research projects of theoretical and practical importance. At the end of the program, graduates will have made a significant contribution to advanced theory and current practice in either
(1) operations management or information systems, or
(2) organizational behaviour or human resource management.

Applications for September start should be received by February 1. Late applications may be considered as time and space permit.

Non-Canadian applicants should allow four to six months for processing of official documents with Immigration authorities.

The applicant may be required to appear for an interview before a final offer of admission is made.

The University reserves the right to refuse admission to any applicant.

Financial Assistance and Awards

The Faculty of Business Administration will provide support to all admitted students for a period of four years. The level of support will be competitive with that offered by other Canadian universities, and may consist of a combination of grant, research assistantship, and teaching assistantship. Details of financial support will be included in letters of acceptance.
Fellowship and research grants for advanced study are available, in open competition, from many organizations and foundations. Students in the Ph.D. program will be required to teach in the third and fourth year of their program.
